Magic Hands explores the gap between knowing and doing. One hand gathers knowledge. The other turns it into action.
Knowledge begins with gathering information, learning from experience and allowing ideas to grow. Action comes next, turning what we know into something real. This second step often takes the most effort because it includes uncertainty, setbacks and trying again.
I brought this idea to life through an abstract sculpture and a stop motion animation. Two hands represent the relationship between learning, effort and the changes we are able to make in the world.
The red hand represents knowledge and holds the world in its palm. I chose red as a reference to the apple from the Tree of Knowledge.
The hand grows through books, studying and life experience. Water flows across the white nest, which is covered with scientific symbols, representing the different sources that feed and develop our knowledge.
Once knowledge gives us a better understanding of the world, it is time to act.
The purple hand represents action and the ability to create change. Part of the hand remains black and unfinished to show that action takes time, effort and repeated attempts. It becomes complete through trying, learning from failure and continuing forward.
I placed the sculpture inside a mirrored box with a silhouette opening. Viewers had to look inside to discover the hands, making curiosity part of the experience.
